Nashville Tea Party: A Reflection
After a long day of Tea Partying, I figured I might write a few words about the day’s events. Most everyone else has covered what happened, where it happened, and how it happened, and you can read those accounts all over the place. I’m just going to briefly comment.
Today’s event in Nashville, I would say, drew a crowd of between five and seven thousand protestors. Local media used the word “hundreds” in several on-air reports, and still others estimated the total attendance at 2,500 – at most. Tea Partiers estimate the number at near-10,000, but I feel that number may be just a little inflated. There’s a happy medium somewhere. Media didn’t take into account the people standing along the street between the Capitol and Legislative Plaza or those standing between Legislative Plaza and TPAC. Even by objective standards, there were plenty more than 2.500.
I’m glad people came out to protest the ever-expanding federal government. I told many today that I did not understand why this had not happened sooner. This all did not happen under Obama’s watch – this has been the trend for decades. Finally, enough people got upset enough to do something about it. The American people are tired of Democrats and Republicans going to Washington to raise our taxes and curtail our freedoms. Today was the manifestation of that anger – that outrage.
And those on the Left – I am so confused as to why they will not join conservatives in this battle. This is not a fight against Democrats. This is a fight against intrusive federal policies and government borrowing and spending. How can someone honestly say, “I want the federal government to borrow from my children and grandchildren and weaken our financial stability in the world”…? That’s what people are saying when they shrug off the Tea Parties: I don’t care that the federal government is f%$king up this nation for future generations.
But today’s event… today’s events were a great success. I met many people – Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Green, etc. – who were just sick and tired of the federal government. Maybe in 2010 we’ll send them all packing.

I love that the message of liberty brings people together!
I took the family down. My oldest was concerned about going. She’s only read about violent protests. She got into the movement and we actually stood right in front of the speakers.
I hope the movement can continue. Nancy Pelosi added some nice gas to the fire with her belittling comments in San Fran. I think that the left elitists are afraid of the movement otherwise they wouldn’t be going out of their way to discredit it.
I never thought that it was a protest for right versus left, Obama versus Bush, Rep versus Dem. Nor was it about taxes per se. It was about government spending and borrowing. I agree that it makes no sense why every American cannot see how this is not a good thing.
