My plan for a GOP-run State House

For too long, hyperpartisanship has ruled the state House of Representatives. Under Speaker Jimmy Naifeh, Democrats and Republicans did not work together. It just wasn’t necessary in order for the party in power to advance their issues. Republicans held ZERO Chairmanships and Vice Chairmanships in Committees – and no Secretary positions, either!

If the Republicans want to truly be successful in the upcoming 106th General Assembly, they’re going to have to learn from the failure of the Democrat leadership in the House: appoint Democrats to leadership positions in Committee!

I know – you probably really want to stick it to Jimmy Naifeh for the atmosphere he’s created in the House, but I implore you to use restraint. Rise above the partisanship – be better than those who came before you. Sincerely reach out to Democrats and offer them positions of leadership.

Remember those seven Republicans who voted for Naifeh last time? Well, some of them are still in the House. The Republican majority is slim, so you might do well to appeal to some Democrats. The most obvious example to me because of my connection to the legislature would be to appoint Donna Rowland as the Chairman of Children and Family Affairs Committee and appoint John DeBerry as Vice Chairman.

It’s going to take a lot of chutzpah, I know. When the Democrats were in power they said, “Republicans won’t play by our rules,” but the rules were always stacked against Republicans. If Republicans reach across the aisle, it changes the game altogether. Before – Republicans stood to gain nothing for voting with Democrats. There will now be some incentive for Democrats and Republicans to work together.

Ya hear me, Jason?
