Davidson County GOP + Matt Collins = CollinsGate
The Davidson County Republican Party moved at its monthly meeting on Tuesday to remove Matt Collins as First Vice Chairman of the DCRP for what it deems “unprofessional actions and words” as well as his use of his title when expressing opinions “derogatory to and disrespectful of Republican candidates or elected officials.” Now, I’ve opined about Collins before because he and I are largely identical ideologically. We both support limited government, free markets, and the expansion of liberty.
Well, he went and got himself elected to the DCRP Executive Committee and proceeded to disrespect Republicans, rather publicly. In my infinite wisdom (/sarcasm), I offered some advice to Collins. I suggested at the time that he resign from his position to pursue his liberty agenda. I don’t necessarily agree with that position so much anymore. In fact, it is a very good idea for folks of Collins’ political persuasion to involve themselves in Republican politics. I’ve never been afraid to shake up the establishment, and I think others feel politically homeless because of their beliefs – many of the same beliefs that were touted and supported by the Republican Party in years past.
Campaign for Liberty, the activist organization that grew out of the Ron Paul movement, has issued a statement, as well.
I believe Collins should challenge the DCRP’s motion. I think he should talk to someone about how to make his case first, but I do not see why the case cannot be made for him to maintain his position.
On Collins’ end, he should apologize and attempt to work within the party structure. The liberty movement was extended an opportunity to work within the DCRP, and it would be foolish for them to squander it now.
