Blogger’s mock legislation picked up by Senate Republican
December 15th, 2008 . by Matthew
Senator Mae Beavers (R - Mount Juliet) filed a bill to require voters to provide an acceptable form of photo identification.
This legislation is strikingly similar to the bill I filed in the 39th General Assembly of the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature in November.
I included a companion piece of legislation that eliminated the driver license provision which allows older Tennesseans to remove their photo from the license. It read
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE 39TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE TENNESSEE INTERCOLLEGIATE STATE LEGISLATURE THAT
SECTION 1. Subsection (a) of Title 55, Chapter 50, Section 335 shall be amended to strike “or bear an endorsement that no photograph is required” and “or endorsement.” The amended subsection shall read, “All driver licenses shall bear a color photograph of the applicant furnished by the department. No license issued shall be valid unless it bears this photograph.”
SECTION 2. This act take effect on January 1, 2009, the public welfare requiring it. License holders have a period of ninety (90) days to renew their license with a new picture at no cost.
